THEATER AND MUSEUM DISTRICT WALKING TOUR

Bounded by College, Elm, York, and Crown Streets, the Theater and Museum District Walking Tour encompasses an area of amazing vibrancy and richness. This small, four-block section of the city boasts world-class art, architecture, and theatre, as well as the heart of one of the most prestigious universities in the world -- and the place where the hamburger was invented, to boot.

The tour starts at the corner of College and Chapel Streets, at INFONewHaven, an incredible resource for learning about all the goings-on in downtown New Haven. (INFONewHaven itself is next door to Claire's Corner Copia, not a site on the tour but a New Haven institution nonetheless.) From there, it proceeds to the White Space Gallery, a wonderful art gallery on Chapel Street; and then to the Union League Cafe, which is located in the Sherman Building, the former residence of Roger Sherman, New Haven's first mayor and the only person whose name appears on the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Articles of Confederation. The tour then passes by some of the most notable buildings at Yale -- Skull and Bones, Harkness Tower and Old Campus, the Art & Architecture Building, Yale University Art Gallery, Yale Repertory Theatre, and Yale Center for British Art -- before ending at Louis Lunch, where the hambuger was invented, and the Shubert Theater, where "Oklahoma" and "A Streetcar Named Desire" premiered. Certainly a lot of art, culture, and history packed into a very small space!

The narrators for the tour are Bruce DelMonico, a New Haven native whose family owns a hat store downtown at the corner of Orange and Elm Streets, and Steve Rupar, a 13-year veteran of the City who is a planning engineer for the Regional Water Authority. We hope you enjoy taking the tour as much as we did putting it together.
